December 12th 2008 18:11
Bettie Page, the controversial 1950s pinup model whose photographs helped set the stage for the sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85. She suffered a heart attack last week in Los Angeles and never regained consciousness, said her agent Mark Roesler. Prior to the heart attack, Page had spent three weeks in the hospital with pneumonia.
Page gained national attention with magazine photographs of her posing in bikinis and see-through lingerie. Among her early credits was a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of Playboy magazine. She also became well known for her appearance in fetish, bondage, and sadomasochistic photos. Bettie Page has remained a cultural icon with a strong cult following to this day, even after she dropped out of the public eye to battle mental illness and eventually become a born again Christian.
