BLACK SWAN
Starring: Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis.
Directed By: Darren Aronofsky
Because I am ridiculously excited about seeing this Suspiria meets The Piano teacher film by Darren Aronofsky, I have decided to do a post in anticipation of its release, featuring the artwork and the trailer.
Black Swan is about Nina (Portman), a ballerina, chosen to play the lead role by the artistic director Thomas (Cassel) in an upcoming production of Swan Lake. Nina is ideal for playing the role of the innocent and graceful white swan, Odette. But she faces competition from newcomer Lily (Kunis), whose sensuality makes her ideal for playing the role of the black swan, Odile. The rivalry forces Nina to get more in touch with her dark side.
In the ballet of Swan Lake, Princess Odette is the lead role, which is combined with that of Odile, and is danced by the same dancer. Odette is an enchanted princess, who is under the spell of the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. She is a swan by day and can only appear in her human form at night. Rothbart's reasons for kidnapping Odette, and cursing her are not explained in the ballet. The only way the spell can be broken is for a young man to declare his eternal, faithful love to Odette. If the vow of eternal love is broken, she will remain a swan forever.
While out hunting, Prince Siegfried comes across the lake where Odette lives and sees her change from her swan form back into her human form. He falls in love with her and she tells him the story of her enchantment. He then promises to love her forever, and invites her to a Royal Ball at his castle so he may choose her as his bride.
Siegfried believes Odette has come to the ball when he sees her arrive with Rothbart. But it is actually Rothbart, with his daughter, Odile, disguised as Odette. Thinking Odile is Odette, Siegfried declares his eternal love and fidelity to her instead. Odette appears at the window in the form of a swan and sees what has happened. Rothbart reveals to Siegfried that Odette is now in his power forever.
Odette flees to the lake, and Siegfried follows her, realising his mistake and begging her to forgive him. Odette tells him that the only way she can be free now is if she dies. She says she would rather die than live without Siegfried. He declares that he does not want to be without her, and so plans to die with her. When Rothbart appears, Odette throws herself into the lake and Siegfried follows her. Rothbart's powers are thus destroyed and the spell is broken.
