HOT FUZZ
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Timothy Dalton, Jim Broadbent.
Written by: Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright
Directed by: Edgar Wright.
Small town England is a terrifying place. It is a pathologically uncool thing to confess to, but I have watched too many Midsomer Murder Mysteries to go to any English village without expecting someone to die. I get the feeling that Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have also watched too many of them, judging from the plot of Hot Fuzz. But that is only one of the many things they riff on in their new comedy. I don’t think I have laughed this hard since Team America: World Police, and, of course, the team’s previous film Shaun of the Dead.
The film begins with an extended take of Simon Pegg walking towards the camera, where he subsequently shoves his ID card into the camera lens and introduces himself as Nicholas Angel, the top cop in the London police force, sorry, squad. Cut to a montage of Nicholas Angel excelling at everything. He does well, so well in fact that he makes everyone else look bad. So his superiors decide to send him away to the small English village of Sandford. A village that is apparently peaceful, crime free and utterly perfect. Or is it?
This is what Angel sets out to discover when a series of “accidents” start happening in the town. Is it as innocent as it appears, or is something more sinister going on? The film riffs well on buddy cop films, the above mentioned Midsomer Murder genre, references Don’t Look Now with its dark hooded killer, and even goes all Wicker Man on us, before turning into a Western that morphs into a full on Michael Bay/Tony Scott actioner for the third act.
The acting is uniformly good. Pegg and Frost display good buddy chemistry as cops Angel and Butterman respectively. Timothy Dalton looks like this is the most fun he has had in years, and Jim Broadbent also looks like he is relishing the chance at comedy.
Edgar Wright displays the same kinetic panache in editing style that he displayed in Shaun of the Dead. For horror fans there are some truly gory death scenes, and a rather gross incident involving a model church. The action of the third act is truly over the top in actioner piss-take style, while being decent action set pieces in themselves. The climax is so big, that just when you think it cannot get any bigger, they throw something else at you.
If you thought Shaun of the Dead was one of the funniest movies you have ever seen, then I recommend Hot Fuzz to you. Once again the team of Wright, Pegg and Frost have managed to create a funny movie with soul.
