One Point O (2004)
Starring: Jeremy Sisto, Udo Kier, Bruce Payne, Lance Henriksen, Deborah Kara Unger.
Written By: Jeff Renfroe, Marteinn Thorsson.
Directed By: Jeff Renfroe, Marteinn Thorsson.

A young computer programmer, Simon, (Jeremy Sisto – Brenda’s crazy brother in TV series Six Feet Under) lives alone in an apartment in a rundown apartment block. He keeps coming home, or waking up, to find that someone has left mysterious packages inside his apartment. When he opens them, they are empty, or are they?

Sitting comfortably within the mindfuck genre, One Point O offers up a critique of modern consumerist society, and corporate ethics. Although it is not entirely successful in how it communicates its ideas, and at times can be quite trying to watch.

After Simon first finds the packages, he becomes obsessed with trying to find out who sent them to him. However, this involves meeting many of his very eccentric neighbours, including nanobot scientist and robot builder Derrick (Udo Kier), sexually liberated Neighbour (no he does not get a name – Bruce Payne) and the attractive Trish (Deborah Unger), as well as the building maintenance guy Howard (Lance Henriksen). A lot of these scenes feel like digressions, and stalling for time in order to delay revealing what is actually going on. Thus the film lacks any real tension and makes it hard to care about Simon’s situation. It is also difficult to tell how paranoid Simon is meant to be getting about the packages and what might be going on in the building when everyone else in the movie is acting so strangely as well.

Despite this, there are some good ideas and nice touches. All of the neighbours appear to be obsessed with one particular type of food or beverage, at the expense of every other type of food or drink. Simon’s landlord eats only one type of meat, the Neighbour “Cola 500!”, and Simon himself, despite being allergic to milk, has an overwhelming compulsion to drink Nature Fresh milk. He even suffers body aches and a near collapse when he tries to quit drinking it. It also appears that Simon’s computer is trying to warn him of possible fatal danger, the robot head, called Adam, that Derrick is building, keeps trying to warn him that he is sick, and his life is in danger. In addition grisly murders are being committed in the apartment building. Are they related to the packages?

Eventually you do get answers as to what is happening, which opens up some interesting questions as to how far corporations may go in the future to advertise their products. There is also a rather surprising and macabre ending. Altogether an okay film, not one of the best entries in the genre. I felt that there was a better film struggling to get out. Still worth a look though.
