Film Rant - Where Bad Movies Get The Respect They Deserve.

Oscar Pedictions 2007

OSCAR PREDICTIONS 2007

Okay, we are a month out from the Oscars, so here are my predictions for the winners so I can look completely foolish when they turn out to be wrong come the end of February.

Firstly, I must admit that I have not actually seen most of the nominated films (gasp) because I live in a backwards country where a lot of them are not out yet.

ANIMATED FEATURE NOMINEES: Cars, Happy Feet, Monster House.

WINNER: Hopefully Monster House. It was the most original, but if the voters are feeling soppy, then Happy Feet.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM NOMINEES: After the Wedding, Days of Glory, The Lives of Others, Pan’s Labyrinth, Water.

WINNER: I know nothing about any of these except Pan’s Labyrinth, which looks awesome. Can’t wait to see it and I hope it wins. It has been getting a lot of critical acclaim.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS NOMINEES: Adriana Barraza, BABEL; Cate Blanchett NOTES ON A SCANDAL; Abigail Breslin, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE; Jennifer Hudson, DREAMGIRLS; Rinko Kikuchi, BABEL.

WINNER: Jennifer Hudson took out the Golden Globe, and has been getting the most buzz from the category, so I will have to go with her.

SUPPORTING ACTOR NOMINEES: Alan Arkin, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE; Jackie Earle Haley, LITTLE CHILDREN; Dijimon Hounsou, BLOOD DIAMOND; Eddie Murphy, DREAMGIRLS; Mark Wahlberg, THE DEPARTED.

WINNER: I really, really, really want Mark Wahlberg to win this category because he stole every scene he was in in The Departed. He was so obscene it was fantastic. He was so good that Alec Baldwin started to copy him halfway through the movie like he thought “I want to do what Mark is doing.” So even though Eddie Murphy won the Golden Globe, people may think he is a twat because of the way he dumped pregnant Scary Spice. I hope Mark takes this category.

ACTRESS NOMINEES: Penelope Cruz, VOLVER; Judi Dench, NOTES ON A SCANDAL; Helen Mirren, THE QUEEN; Meryl Streep, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA; Kate Winslet, LITTLE CHILDREN.

WINNER: Hard one to pick given that only one of the nominees is American, and we know how the voters love to vote for their own, but can Streep’s comedic turn triumph over the more dramatic roles of the others? Helen Mirren has been getting most of the buzz, and she took out the Golden Globe, but Oscar’s track record for awarding Oscars to women over forty is not good. Then there is Kate Winslet who has been nominated for an Oscar for the fifth time now with Little Children: twice for Best Supporting Actress and three times for Best Actress. They even took the piss out of her being nominated so many times without winning in her guest appearance on Extras: “Why hasn’t Winslet won one?” Maybe the voters will decide that her time has come. And then there is Judi Dench as a psycho lesbian in Notes on a Scandal, what’s not to like? I will venture that it will go to Helen Mirren for The Queen. Americans love the British royalty after all.

ACTOR NOMINEES: Leonardo DiCaprio, BLOOD DIAMOND; Ryan Gosling, HALF NELSON; Peter O’Toole, VENUS; Will Smith, THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS; Forest Whitaker, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND.

WINNER: Again some tough choices. DiCaprio may win for a joint effort for The Departed and Blood Diamond, but then Peter O’Toole must be nearly dead, and that always garners sympathy. Will Smith does a good turn in The Pursuit of Happyness, and missed out on an Oscar for Ali, but does it bug anyone else that “Happyness” is spelt wrong? I am going to follow the Golden Globes on this one and say Forest Whitaker because nothing says Oscar like playing a flawed fascist dictator.

DIRECTOR NOMINEES: Gonzalez Inarritu, BABEL; Martin Scorsese, THE DEPARTED; Clint Eastwood, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA; Stephen Frears, THE QUEEN; Paul Greengrass, UNITED 93.

WINNER: Okay, who doesn’t want Martin Scorsese to win this one? Clint Eastwood already has two best director Oscars, while Scorsese has missed out for Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, and The Aviator. Enough is enough, The Golden Globes had it right so just give the man an Oscar already. How many awesome films does he have to make?

BEST PICTURE NOMINEES: Babel, The Departed, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen.

WINNER: Let’s just give this to Martin Scorsese as well, shall we? Although it might not win because it is a remake of another film, Infernal Affairs, and therefore not original genius. Babel has been getting a lot of buzz, and took home the Golden Globe, but it is a bit foreign for Oscar. By the way, please pronounce it Bay-bell, not Babble, as a lot of morons have been calling it. The Queen is British made, and that is probably going too far for America, and Letters from Iwo Jima is probably too Japanese and Clint Eastwood’s shelf must be full from The Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby anyway. Little Miss Sunshine is the only one not nominated for Best Director and it is rare to win Best Picture if you are not nominated in the director category too. Let’s just stick with The Departed because I like it.

Eye,

Have absolutely no idea about any of this but figured you deserved a comment and vote for bravery. Hope you're at least halfway there.

Hi All Seeing Eye,

Im not big on the Oscars, most of the nominations were average examples of 2007 cinema but I do hope Forrest Whitaker wins and it would be nice if Alan Arkin got a statue for hilarious turn in Little Miss Sunshine and so should Abigail Bressin.

Little Miss Sunshine will take the Oscar, and Paul Greengrass might take the Director for United 93. Little Miss Sunshine was the best picture by a landslide; a little honest, and a little comedy helps the message go down nicer. I like this movie bc it's original and sincere, and its rare to see something so deep seem so light and easy to watch. However, the cinematography was mediocre, and that is why is was not nominated for best director. Cinematography is very important to the Academy, despite last years "Crash" catastrophe. What the hell was that?

None of the movies were brilliant except "Babel" and "Sunshine". "Babel" really won last year when "Crash" did take the undeserved from "Brokeback Mountain". So, I would chose "Sunshine". It really is a powerful film that doesn't come off as pretentiouss or melodramatic.

"Letters" - ***1/2 - No one thought of this before? It is powerful but I've been thinking of the other side since the first Lord of the Rings, and I think Star Wars did this better in metaphor.

"The Departed" - **1/2 - Over the top and frankly unrealistic popcorn film. Superb acting all around the board. Yet, suprisingly mediocre in it's screenplay and message. I did like the rat crawling through the sewers though.

"The Queen" - **1/2 - Wow, nice acting, here again, but what else was spectacular about it? Sheen did well too. It is a bit of a "Capote" although Capote was better.

"Babel" - **** - What a way to jam it down the audiences throught without ever picking up a spoon. It was easy to get, but the message was solid and very true. Extraordinary performance by Rinko. However, it is unfortunately unoriginal.

"Sunshine" - **** - My mind and heart fell in love with this movie. It worked on so many different levels. Screenplay is nearly flawless and is a nice reprieve. So many films think they have to be sickly dark or contraversial to be effective or even introspective. And sometimes this is true. However, "Sunshine" shows us that there is still some real and true power to film and that we can use happiness to our advantage without looking campy or cheesy. Damn good movie.
