OSCAR PREDICTIONS 2008

OSCAR PREDICTIONS 2008

It’s that time again. I have delayed giving my predictions for The Oscars, because there may not even be an Oscar ceremony this year. That writers’ strike has thrown into disarray the awards season, but in case there is a ceremony, and statuettes are handed out, here are my brave, and hopefully accurate, predictions. Note: living Down Under, I have not seen all the nominated films, because they have not all been released here in New Zealand yet.

ANIMATED FEATURE NOMINEES: Persepolis, Ratatouille, Surf’s Up.

WINNER: Not Surf’s Up because people must be sick of animated penguin movies by now, surely? Persepolis I know nothing about. Ratatouille however, has been nominated elsewhere by the Academy, so I say voters will go with Ratatouille.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS NOMINEES: Cate Blanchett, I’M NOT THERE; Ruby Dee, AMERICAN GANGSTER; Saoirse Ronan, ATONEMENT; Amy Ryan, GONE BABY GONE; Tilda Swinton, MICHAEL CLAYTON.

WINNER: Cate Blanchett is always reliable, again channelling a famous persona after her former Oscar winning turn as Katherine Hepburn. Saoirse Ronan gives an excellent performance in Atonement and the Academy loves child actors in the supporting categories. Tilda Swinton is well-regarded, but has not won an Academy Award yet. I’m going to go with Cate Blanchett because her performance has been generating quite a lot of buzz.

SUPPORTING ACTOR NOMINEES: Casey Affleck, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD; Javier Bardem, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN; Philip Seymour Hoffman, CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR; Hal Holbrook, INTO THE WILD; Tom Wilkinson, MICHAEL CLAYTON.

WINNER: Frankly, I am just going to have to go with Javier Bardem for his chilling turn in No Country For Old Men.

ACTRESS NOMINEES: Cate Blanchett, ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE; Julie Christie, AWAY FROM HER; Marion Cotillard, LA VIE EN ROSE; Laura Linney, THE SAVAGES; Ellen Page, JUNO.

WINNER: Probably Laura Linney, purely because she is always excellent and has been nominated twice before for an Academy Award, but has not won one so far. The other strong contender is Julie Christie. Although she has won Best Actress before that was back in 1966. But I think I will stick with Linney as the category winner.

ACTOR NOMINEES: George Clooney, MICHAEL CLAYTON; Daniel Day-Lewis, THERE WILL BE BLOOD; Johnny Depp, SWEENEY TOOD THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET; Tommy Lee Jones, IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH; Viggo Mortensen, EASTERN PROMISES.

WINNER: Tough call. I would like to see Johnny Depp take this one, but I am not sure if a throat slitting musical is really the sort of film that takes out a Best Actor Award. Day-Lewis has been getting a lot of buzz for a film that basically centres around his character and his performance. Tommy Lee Jones could be a contender for In The Valley Of Elah, because he also did an excellent job with No Country For Old Men. So he could essentially win for being good in both films. But I’m going to go with Daniel Day-Lewis. After all it has been a while since My Left Foot.

DIRECTOR NOMINEES: Julian Schnabel, THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY; Jason Reitman, JUNO; Tony Gilroy, MICHAEL CLAYTON; Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN; Paul Thomas Anderson, THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

WINNER: I am not sure what is with leaving Joe Wright off the Best Director Nominee list. Granted he has only directed two films, but Atonement was definitely a directorial achievement. Anyway, I will say that the Coen’s will probably take this one. It has been a while (twelve years) since their last serious Oscar contender, Fargo, for which they were nominated but did not win Best Picture and Best Director. This may be their year.

BEST PICTURE NOMINEES: ATONEMENT, JUNO, MICHAEL CLAYTON, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

WINNER: Although I thought when I saw Atonement that it would be a serious contender for Best Picture, it is rare to win this category when not nominated for Best Director. Since I thought that Atonement was No Country For Old Men's greatest rival for Best Picture, I am going to have to go with No Country For Old Men to take this category too. Nothing but stellar reviews and its buzz for Oscar is greater than the other films, despite Juno’s good reception.
